Yes, it's a long time since we wrote... but we have been busy putting together the most amazing exotica shows for you! Lots of great announcements in this email. Hard to decide what to write first, but you guys will read the whole thing anyway, right? So here goes...
<h3>CHART TOPPING albums by The WAITIKI 7!</h3>
<p>A few weeks ago we made exotica history, when we SOARED to the top of the charts—<strong>nailing down the <u>#1</u> spot on <em>JazzWeek World</em> and <u>#2</u> on <em>CMJ Jazz</em> with our sophomore release, <em><a href="http://waitiki.com/shop/#music/newsoundsofexotica">New Sounds of Exotica</a></em></strong>. But that's not all. Simultaneously, last year's album <em><a href="http://waitiki.com/shop/#music/adventuresinparadise">Adventures in Paradise</a></em> returned to the charts at <u><strong>#4</strong></u>. These charts track airplay in major markets throughout North America—on independent, public, triple-A, collegiate, and satellite stations; and on programs for jazz, world, specialty, exotica, talk, and beyond—and <strong>The WAITIKI 7 is the <u>only</u> modern exotica group to receive such widespread airplay!</strong> <em>Special kudos to our radio team at <strong>Groov</strong> for all the hard work they put in for us.</em> And of course to <u>all
of you</u> for listening, requesting, and spreading the word about our music. </p>
<h3>WEST COAST DEBUT: DEC 30-31 at DON THE BEACHCOMBER'S (Huntington Beach, CA)</h3>
<p>The Legendary Tiki Venue <strong><a href="http://donthebeachcomber.com">DON THE BEACHCOMBER</a></strong> is presenting not one, but TWO amazing nights of live exotica, celebrities, cocktails, and parties in celebration of the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. On <strong><u>December 30</u></strong>, join <strong>The WAITIKI 7</strong> in the High Chiefs' Room as we commemorate classic tiki tunes with the extraordinary jazz clarinetist and composer <strong>ROBERT DRASNIN</strong> and vocalist <strong>SHERRY SHAOLING</strong>. We'll be performing our arrangements of Bob's legendary <em>Voodoo!</em> album; a requisite for any space-age bachelor pad, as well diving deep into the songbooks of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Cal Tjader, and Les Baxter. (Wooo! We can hardly wait!). </p>
<p>Long-time WAITIKI fans may recognize <u>Sherry Shaoling</u> from the cover of our <em><a href="http://waitiki.com/shop/#music/rendezvousinokonkuluku">Rendezvous in Okonkuluku</a></em> CD. Or maybe you know her as the songstress of Honolulu’s exotica darlings Don Tiki. In any case, Sherry has a brilliant voice that channels the golden voices of Ethel Azama and Yma Sumac. Sherry's performance with WAITIKI 7 and Bob Drasnin will also be <em>her</em> West Coast tiki debut, as she is rarely heard in exotica music outside of Hawaii!</p>
<p>In the outer Dagger Bar and adjoining dining rooms, Brother Cleve and The Millionaire will spin everything from go-go and surf to exotica disco and big beat in their first joint DJ appearance in fifteen years. <em>(If you wanna hear Cleve's impeccable ears for mid-century lounge, you can get a preview at Forbidden Island Alameda in two weeks—Oct. 24—party starts at 6pm; DJ Otto & bartender Suzanne Long will be in the hale as well)</em>. </p>
<p>Then, for <u><strong>New Year's Eve</strong></u>, the WAITIKI 7 get swanky, in a danceable homage to <strong>Combustible Edison</strong>, pioneers of the renewed interest in mid-century modern music in the '90s. The evening will feature the first performance of Combustible Edison’s music since the band’s demise a decade ago, with help from CE alums Brother Cleve and The Millionaire. Midnight will transform the ballroom into a full-on tiki dance party! WAITIKI and Combustible Edison will reveal their mixologist sides as well: Original craft cocktails by Brother Cleve, Randy Wong, and others will join Beach’s creations on the drink menu.</p>

<h3>Start booking your airfare today!</h3>
<p>We suggest arriving on Dec. 28 to allow time to check out all the fabulous mid-century modern stuff in Long Beach! Airport-wise, Long Beach Airport (LGB) is closest to Don The Beachcomber's, but LAX will work also. Hey, if you fly into LAX then you gotta check out Randy's grandfather's famous Theme Building (the spaceship-looking thing at LAX), which has recently been restored for the public visits. Lots of prime airfares from the East Coast, Midwest, South, and Hawaii are on sale right now. (We know, we've been checking every day!) Book'em while they got'em!</p>
<p>There are a number of hotels close to Don The Beachcomber's—some even within stumbling distance—or if you're really adventurous, you can go camping. Our friend Doc Martian suggests <a href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=616">Leo Carillo State Park</a> if you're so inclined. Doc says,
<blockquote>"It'll be like summer in Boston, avg. December Malibu high temp 65° avg. low 51°. The locals may be a little cold, but I'm sure there'll be some blankets to share. There are reservations there too: <a href="http://leocarrillo.com/reservations.htm">http://leocarrillo.com/reservations.htm</a>."</blockquote> We'll be hanging around a lot too, and depending on how many of you show up, maybe even organize some other daytime hangs. <h3>The "Combustible Waitiki" Cocktail Contest!</h3>
<p>Do you have an original cocktail recipe that should be called the "Combustible Waitiki"? Submit it to our first-ever cocktail contest! The winning recipe will hopefully be featured at our New Year's Eve Party and who knows when/where else! Plus you'll get some cool WAITIKI swag that no one else has. (We promise.) <h3>Wong's Tahitian Milk Punch Now At Clio (Boston)</h3>
<p>The Tahitian Milk Punch is now on the dinner cocktail list at <a href="http://cliorestaurant.com"><strong>Clio</strong></a>! Styled after the <u>1711 Mary Rockett formula</u>, Randy's recipe infuses Batavia Arrack with fresh pineapple, Tahitian vanilla beans, ginger, and lime. It was formerly called the Tahitian Lana'i Milk Punch and tied for 2nd place in the 2nd Annual Dole Cocktail Contest which drew contestants nationwide, held at Ohana: Luau At The Lake in Lake George, NY. So what are you waiting for? Head on down to Clio (in the Eliot Hotel, corner of Mass. and Comm. avenues) and order one today! Totally awesome to see TWO exotica albums on the charts and getting major airplay across North America. We are being spun in heavy rotation everywhere: on major market stations, syndicated shows, internet radio, indie stations, and your home tiki bar. <p>Our "Sounds of Exotica Lounge" show back in April was a huge success, in large part to a collaboration with <strong>Harold Chang</strong> (former percussionist of the original Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman groups). Uncle Harold, as we call him, took some blazing solos on bongos, congas, bird calls—hallmarks of exotica that he and Augie Colon created back in the '50s. <h3>Our Chee-Hoo Fizz Cocktail Makes It To Paris</h3>
<p>Belated congratulations and mahalos are in store for master bartender, mixology historian, and and TED presenter <strong>John Gertsen</strong>. John—who has championed tiki mixology in Boston through weekly Tiki Sundays at his bar <strong>Drink</strong>—traveled to Paris last month for the 2010 international Cocktails Spirits expo. John spoke about the Boston cocktail revival, the success of Drink, and the rise of home mixologists in America; to which he demo'd two cocktails, one of which was <strong>Randy Wong's Chee-Hoo Fizz</strong>, a tiki-style fizz based on the classic Japanese cocktail. Our sincere thanks to John for including a tiki drink in his presentation!</p>

The Kahiki Serenaders bring back the music of Hawaii's golden age, when transpacific steamships docked at Aloha Tower and passengers were greeted by the Boat Day wahine of downtown Honolulu. </p>
<p>Paying deep respect to the classic hapa-haole tunes (songs with primarily English lyrics, set to Hawaiian melodies and jazz harmonies) of Sol Hoopii, Andrew Aiona, and early Gabby Pahinui—as well as songs by R. Alex Anderson, Harry Owens, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and others—The Kahiki Serenaders set sail on their own course with a stellar line-up: Greg Paré, vibes; Rusty Scott, piano; Keala Kaumeheiwa, upright bass; and Drank Sumatra, drums. </p>

<h3>From the <em>WAITIKI Cocktail Journal</em></h3>
The first two of this month's cocktail recipes come from the Room Bar we hosted at Ohana a few weeks ago. Our room featured Cape Verdean Grogue, which is similar to Martinique agricole rums in taste and distillation process. We highlighted two such grogues in our recipes, the Nova (unaged) and the Velha (aged), both from the distillary Santo Antao. We get our grogues from Jerry's Liquors in Somerville, MA. If you can't find grogue in your hometown, try a Rhum Barbancourt. (Substitute the Barbancourt white for the Nova and the 3-star for the Velha). All recipes here created by WAITIKI mixologist Randy Wong.

<p>This last recipe began life as a virgin (non-alcoholic) drink, perfect as a summertime cooler or when you return from a tiki festival with 3 pounds too many limes! </p>
<h4><em>OLD SPICE COCKTAIL</em></h4>
2.0 oz. fresh lime juice<br />
0.5 oz. cardamom simple syrup <br />
0.5 oz. grenadine<br />
1 bar spoon table sugar<br />
Dash Angostura bitters<br />
<p><em>Shake & strain into a DOF glass with crushed ice. Fill to top with soda, add bitters and swizzle. To make the cardamom simple syrup: Muddle 1/4 c. cardamom in a sauce pan and toast lightly. Add 1 c. water and 1 lb. sugar; stir over low heat and let cool.</p>
<p>For an alcoholic version, add 0.5 oz. allspice dram to the recipe. Mahalo to Cleve and Brynn for helping hone this recipe last night! </em></p>

<p>When last we wrote, The WAITIKI 7 were getting ready to make a big debut throughout Honolulu. Thank you to all who came and showed support for the return of live exotica music. </p>

Our education initiative, <b>Exotica in Education</b>, launched last September with a visit by The WAITIKI 7 to the <b>Josiah Quincy Upper School</b> (Boston). More than just a show-and-tell about the instruments and its illustrious bird calls, Exotica in Education is as much about the opening of dialogue about the cultural, historical, and social themes surrounding exotica as it is the music's composition and performance. In addition to The Waitiki 7 (Tim Mayer, Helen Liu, Zaccai Curtis, Jim Benoit, Abe Lagrimas Jr., Lopaka Colon, and Randy Wong), Mike Dease and Greg Pare both lend their talents to the album as special guests.</p> <h3>Island Contemporary Album of the Year Nominee: <em>Magic Island Sounds: the wedding album</em></h3> <p><em>Magic Island Sounds</em> began as a personal side project for Randy Wong, President/Founder of WAITIKI INTERNATIONAL, and Helen Liu, violinist of The Waitiki 7. Though they originally intended to use it only as wedding favors, the album's charming collection of contemporary Hawaiian songs made it the perfect musical backdrop to complement their island wedding ceremony. Word soon spread amongst guests and friends about the magic of the music, and due to high demand, WAITIKI commercially released "Magic Island Sounds." It was great to finally meet you in person. Your love for live exotica and hunger for our music is quite humbling! <h4>WFMU Re-Broadcast at 6PM ET TODAY</h4>
Last Saturday, following a taping for <strong>Armchair Travelling's</strong> <em>DVD of TIKI</em> we found ourselves sitting in 5 hours of NJ traffic thanks to some bonehead construction just a half mile from WFMU. We never thought we'd make it to the station. But when we did, the time was ripe for us to play some ultra slick live exotica.<br><br>
If you missed last week's broadcast of our live performance for WFMU, you can catch it again today! It airs at 6 PM. Tune into WFMU on the ray-dee-oh or online at <a href="http://wfmu.org" target="_blank">wfmu.org</a>. Or, if you really can't make it, check it out later: The show will be permanently archived online a few hours after it airs.<br><br>

For you radiophiles: Per the 9/22 College Music Journal charts, we debuted at #30 on the CMJ World Top 40 and were the CMJ #4 Most Added (Jazz). Also, NPR's Morning Edition has really taken a liking to us for their interlude music! Over at JazzWeek World, we peaked at #3 a few weeks ago but have been holding steady at #8. Many thanks to our radio promoter Mitchell Feldman for these excellent results.
