Starring Robert Drasnin, Sherry Shaoling, Brother Cleve & The Millionaire of Combustible Edison, in WAITIKI's own arrangements of your favorite exotica and space-age bachelor pad hits. WAITIKI is traveling across the country for this special, star-studded three-night exotica-stavaganza; the only event of its kind—maybe ever?

The Real Deal

As a WAITIKI Newsletter subscriber, we know you accept no imitations. We've been working towards this event for months; this Festival of Music & Cocktails will propel the exotica music you love far into the future. We're excited for this event unlike anything else on the planet, and would be truly honored for you to be at Don's with us to celebrate with us!

Re-Introducing Our Classic Quartet

Many of you first met us in Boston, during our Quartet days. While we've been focusing on The WAITIKI 7, our classic WAITIKI Quartet—for which the Hawaii Music Awards began its "Exotica" category—hasn't been forgotten: in fact, the Quartet opens the Festival with a night of "The Jazz Sides of Exotica" Wednesday Dec. 29. Oh, and probably some of our cult faves like "Fuzzy Mammoth Breath" and "Pan-XOTIK-Da (Eats Shoots and Leaves)" for you old-timer fans ...

West Coast Debut of The WAITIKI 7

On Thursday Dec. 30 and Friday Dec. 31, our flagship group The WAITIKI 7 takes the stage; featuring a core rhythm section of three of Hawaii's finest musicians (Lopaka Colon, Abe Lagrimas Jr., and Randy Wong), each whom has performed with the father of exotica, Martin Denny, and/or his bandmates. Lopaka, Abe, and Randy are ably joined by their peers: Grammy-nominated virtuosic jazz, Latin, and classically-trained Boston musicians (Tim Mayer, Zaccai Curtis, Jim Benoit, Helen Liu) whose credits include John Williams's Star Wars In Concert, Paquito D'Rivera, Heineken Jazz Festival, the Boston Pops, the Honolulu Symphony, and many more.

Hear the chart-topping WAITIKI 7 live and in living "exoticolor"— and see for yourself why their music has ignited radio stations across North America (placing them at #1 on the JazzWeek World and #2 on the CMJ Jazz charts; above releases by legendary artists like Bob Marley, Bobby McFerrin, and Christian McBride).

With two critically-acclaimed albums, Adventures in Paradise and New Sounds of Exotica, The WAITIKI 7 has shaken, stirred, and thrilled listeners from Germany to Hawaii. You can be next!

Need A Hotel? We Got Deals

The WAITIKI 7's West Coast Debut @ Don The Beachcomber's; Cocktail Contest; The Quartet Plays Rochester (NY) on Nov. 10; KLVU & Clio!

Aloha WAITIKI fans!

Yes, it's a long time since we wrote... but we have been busy putting together the most amazing exotica shows for you! Lots of great announcements in this email. Hard to decide what to write first, but you guys will read the whole thing anyway, right? So here goes...

CHART TOPPING albums by The WAITIKI 7!

A few weeks ago we made exotica history, when we SOARED to the top of the charts—nailing down the #1 spot on JazzWeek World and #2 on CMJ Jazz with our sophomore release, New Sounds of Exotica. But that's not all. Simultaneously, last year's album Adventures in Paradise returned to the charts at #4. These charts track airplay in major markets throughout North America—on independent, public, triple-A, collegiate, and satellite stations; and on programs for jazz, world, specialty, exotica, talk, and beyond—and The WAITIKI 7 is the only modern exotica group to receive such widespread airplay! Special kudos to our radio team at Groov for all the hard work they put in for us. And of course to all
of you for listening, requesting, and spreading the word about our music.

WEST COAST DEBUT: DEC 30-31 at DON THE BEACHCOMBER'S (Huntington Beach, CA)

The Legendary Tiki Venue DON THE BEACHCOMBER is presenting not one, but TWO amazing nights of live exotica, celebrities, cocktails, and parties in celebration of the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. On December 30, join The WAITIKI 7 in the High Chiefs' Room as we commemorate classic tiki tunes with the extraordinary jazz clarinetist and composer ROBERT DRASNIN and vocalist SHERRY SHAOLING. We'll be performing our arrangements of Bob's legendary Voodoo! album; a requisite for any space-age bachelor pad, as well diving deep into the songbooks of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Cal Tjader, and Les Baxter. (Wooo! We can hardly wait!).

Long-time WAITIKI fans may recognize Sherry Shaoling from the cover of our Rendezvous in Okonkuluku CD. Or maybe you know her as the songstress of Honolulu’s exotica darlings Don Tiki. In any case, Sherry has a brilliant voice that channels the golden voices of Ethel Azama and Yma Sumac. Sherry's performance with WAITIKI 7 and Bob Drasnin will also be her West Coast tiki debut, as she is rarely heard in exotica music outside of Hawaii!

In the outer Dagger Bar and adjoining dining rooms, Brother Cleve and The Millionaire will spin everything from go-go and surf to exotica disco and big beat in their first joint DJ appearance in fifteen years. (If you wanna hear Cleve's impeccable ears for mid-century lounge, you can get a preview at Forbidden Island Alameda in two weeks—Oct. 24—party starts at 6pm; DJ Otto & bartender Suzanne Long will be in the hale as well).

Then, for New Year's Eve, the WAITIKI 7 get swanky, in a danceable homage to Combustible Edison, pioneers of the renewed interest in mid-century modern music in the '90s. The evening will feature the first performance of Combustible Edison’s music since the band’s demise a decade ago, with help from CE alums Brother Cleve and The Millionaire. Midnight will transform the ballroom into a full-on tiki dance party! WAITIKI and Combustible Edison will reveal their mixologist sides as well: Original craft cocktails by Brother Cleve, Randy Wong, and others will join Beach’s creations on the drink menu.

Tickets will be sold at the DON THE BEACHCOMBER website and will be available soon!

Start booking your airfare today!

We suggest arriving on Dec. 28 to allow time to check out all the fabulous mid-century modern stuff in Long Beach! Airport-wise, Long Beach Airport (LGB) is closest to Don The Beachcomber's, but LAX will work also. Hey, if you fly into LAX then you gotta check out Randy's grandfather's famous Theme Building (the spaceship-looking thing at LAX), which has recently been restored for the public visits. Lots of prime airfares from the East Coast, Midwest, South, and Hawaii are on sale right now. (We know, we've been checking every day!) Book'em while they got'em!

There are a number of hotels close to Don The Beachcomber's—some even within stumbling distance—or if you're really adventurous, you can go camping. Our friend Doc Martian suggests Leo Carillo State Park if you're so inclined. Doc says,

"It'll be like summer in Boston, avg. December Malibu high temp 65° avg. low 51°. The locals may be a little cold, but I'm sure there'll be some blankets to share. There are reservations there too: http://leocarrillo.com/reservations.htm."
We'll be hanging around a lot too, and depending on how many of you show up, maybe even organize some other daytime hangs. Send us an email once you book your trip and let us know!

The "Combustible Waitiki" Cocktail Contest!

Do you have an original cocktail recipe that should be called the "Combustible Waitiki"? Submit it to our first-ever cocktail contest! The winning recipe will hopefully be featured at our New Year's Eve Party and who knows when/where else! Plus you'll get some cool WAITIKI swag that no one else has. (We promise.) Complete rules, online submission form, and details at: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDI2MVpzRzYxcEJybS1KZWszUFNnbVE6MQ. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM on November 21, 2010.

The WAITIKI Quartet 'Plays' Rochester (NY)!

True or False: "Exotica is uniquely American music." ... TRUE! You know how we know? 'Cuz the Strong National Museum of Play has invited us to perform as part of their Making American Music concert series! Show is Wednesday, November 10 at 7:30 PM. Tickets available by calling the Museum: (585) 263-2300, or online: http://www.museumofplay.org/see-do/events/mam.

Oct. 15 (This Friday): KVLU's "Al Dugan on Classics" talks Exotica w/Randy

What classical composers and pieces preface the compositional and orchestration styles mainstreamed by exotica? Check out this two-hour special and find out. The show has some really great music—certainly not as dry as how we just described it. Tune in to 91.3 FM if you live in Beaumont (TX) or listen live online at kvlu.org.

Wong's Tahitian Milk Punch Now At Clio (Boston)

The Tahitian Milk Punch is now on the dinner cocktail list at Clio! Styled after the 1711 Mary Rockett formula, Randy's recipe infuses Batavia Arrack with fresh pineapple, Tahitian vanilla beans, ginger, and lime. It was formerly called the Tahitian Lana'i Milk Punch and tied for 2nd place in the 2nd Annual Dole Cocktail Contest which drew contestants nationwide, held at Ohana: Luau At The Lake in Lake George, NY. So what are you waiting for? Head on down to Clio (in the Eliot Hotel, corner of Mass. and Comm. avenues) and order one today! And greet bar manager Todd Maul with the Handshake of Okonkuluku—he's a wizard with tiki cocktails you'll be sure to love.

That's it for now! Stay tuned for more details and ticket sales for Dec 30-31!

Blast-Off for "New Sounds of Exotica"; Tiki Cocktail Recipes; Kahiki Serenaders Video & More...

Aloha WAITIKI fans!

Great to meet so many of you at the Hukilau and Ohana: Luau At The Lake festivals we've attended this summer. We like putting faces to screennames just as much as putting back a Chee-Hoo Fizz or two. Here are some music and cocktail updates from the world o' Okonkuluku ...

WAITIKI 7 Ignites The Radio Dial

Not only is our newest release New Sounds of Exotica holding steady at #6 on JazzWeek World, but 2009's Adventures in Paradise is chartbound as well. Totally awesome to see TWO exotica albums on the charts and getting major airplay across North America. We are being spun in heavy rotation everywhere: on major market stations, syndicated shows, internet radio, indie stations, and your home tiki bar. To see how we stack up with other major world artists, visit The WAITIKI 7's Facebook page and see our "Radio Charts" photo album. Thanks for your support and keep requesting The WAITIKI 7!

Video: Harold Chang & The WAITIKI 7

Our "Sounds of Exotica Lounge" show back in April was a huge success, in large part to a collaboration with Harold Chang (former percussionist of the original Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman groups). Uncle Harold, as we call him, took some blazing solos on bongos, congas, bird calls—hallmarks of exotica that he and Augie Colon created back in the '50s. Check out these two videos of Uncle Harold performing and soloing with us:

"Rendezvous in Okonkuluku" at Fresh Café - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9svESPwruDc

Our Chee-Hoo Fizz Cocktail Makes It To Paris

Belated congratulations and mahalos are in store for master bartender, mixology historian, and and TED presenter John Gertsen. John—who has championed tiki mixology in Boston through weekly Tiki Sundays at his bar Drink—traveled to Paris last month for the 2010 international Cocktails Spirits expo. John spoke about the Boston cocktail revival, the success of Drink, and the rise of home mixologists in America; to which he demo'd two cocktails, one of which was Randy Wong's Chee-Hoo Fizz, a tiki-style fizz based on the classic Japanese cocktail. Our sincere thanks to John for including a tiki drink in his presentation!

Check out excerpts of John's presentation online at Viddler:

http://www.viddler.com/explore/jrgmyr/videos/4/

The Chee-Hoo Fizz segment starts around 12:15, but really you should watch the whole thing!

More Reviews for New Sounds of Exotica

"If WAITIKI 7 doesn't appear on every episode of Hawaii Five-O or score a residency in Waikiki, I'll be disappointed."—Giant Robot #66

"The septet's gorgeous melodies do more than renew a bygone genre. Its radiant brand of exotica crosses into Latin jazz with just as much poise and dexterity, often melding the two."—ALARM Magazine

"Four Stars" —Chuck Campbell, Scripps Howard News Service

Introducing WAITIKI's Kahiki Serenaders: Vintage '20s-'30s Hawaiian & Hapa-Haole Music Meets The Sound of Exotica.

THE KAHIKI SERENADERS are the newest group to be added to our award-winning and internationally-acclaimed artist roster. The Kahiki Serenaders bring back the music of Hawaii's golden age, when transpacific steamships docked at Aloha Tower and passengers were greeted by the Boat Day wahine of downtown Honolulu.

Paying deep respect to the classic hapa-haole tunes (songs with primarily English lyrics, set to Hawaiian melodies and jazz harmonies) of Sol Hoopii, Andrew Aiona, and early Gabby Pahinui—as well as songs by R. Alex Anderson, Harry Owens, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and others—The Kahiki Serenaders set sail on their own course with a stellar line-up: Greg Paré, vibes; Rusty Scott, piano; Keala Kaumeheiwa, upright bass; and Drank Sumatra, drums.

Check them out on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMqU1tuPvxI and "Like" them on their Facebook Page! An internet-only album is planned, so stay tuned...

From the WAITIKI Cocktail Journal

The first two of this month's cocktail recipes come from the Room Bar we hosted at Ohana a few weeks ago. Our room featured Cape Verdean Grogue, which is similar to Martinique agricole rums in taste and distillation process. We highlighted two such grogues in our recipes, the Nova (unaged) and the Velha (aged), both from the distillary Santo Antao. We get our grogues from Jerry's Liquors in Somerville, MA. If you can't find grogue in your hometown, try a Rhum Barbancourt. (Substitute the Barbancourt white for the Nova and the 3-star for the Velha). All recipes here created by WAITIKI mixologist Randy Wong.

ORCHARD DE PAÚL

(Paúl is the village where Santo Antao grogues are distilled).

1.5 oz Santo Antao Nova
0.5 oz Lillet
0.5 oz Chambord
0.5 oz fresh oj
0.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice
0.5 oz fresh lime juice

Shake, double strain, serve over crushed ice in a DOF. Garnish with a Luxardo marasca cherry on a toothpick and smile!

GROGUE DRY TAI

1.0 oz Santo Antao Velha
1.0 oz Lemon Hart 80
1.0 oz Orgeat (we used Ferrara)
.75 oz fresh lime juice
.50 oz curacao

Shake, double strain, serve "up" in a chilled cocktail glass.

This last recipe began life as a virgin (non-alcoholic) drink, perfect as a summertime cooler or when you return from a tiki festival with 3 pounds too many limes!

OLD SPICE COCKTAIL

2.0 oz. fresh lime juice
0.5 oz. cardamom simple syrup
0.5 oz. grenadine
1 bar spoon table sugar
Dash Angostura bitters

Shake & strain into a DOF glass with crushed ice. Fill to top with soda, add bitters and swizzle. To make the cardamom simple syrup: Muddle 1/4 c. cardamom in a sauce pan and toast lightly. Add 1 c. water and 1 lb. sugar; stir over low heat and let cool.

For an alcoholic version, add 0.5 oz. allspice dram to the recipe. Mahalo to Cleve and Brynn for helping hone this recipe last night!

Video: Hawaii Music Award Presentation

Music Foundation of Hawai'i sent executive producer Johnny Kai to present The WAITIKI 7 with an award for Exotica Album of the Year for "Adventures in Paradise," which we released last August. As a token of our appreciation, we performed the venerable hit "Quiet Village."

See us getting the award, and hear Quiet Village at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oI7eUsG9M00

See You at Tiki Oasis!

If you're hankerin for some WAITIKI in LP, CD, comic book, or butter (yes! the fruit butters!)-form, stop by our booth at this summer's Tiki Oasis, August 19-22. We'll be sharing a table with the legendary Richard Cheese, who also has a new tiki album out. Stop by and say okonkuluku!

MAHALO FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF EXOTICA MUSIC & TIKI COCKTAILS DONE RIGHT!

ALOHA WAITIKI FANS!

And a fond welcome to those of you new to our mailing list. Sorry this email is so belated, we have been very busy getting The WAITIKI 7's new album New Sounds of Exotica ready for public consumption... and oh, is it ready! Featuring some of our favorite Martin Denny tunes, like "When First I Love" and "Similau" to newly written arrangements of WAITIKI standards that really showcase The WAITIKI 7's musicians.

If you get the actual CD, you're in for a treat. Central to the artwork is "Exotica Nightfall," an original painting by renown tiki artist Sam Gambino. Photographer Jason Goodman has stellar shots of Honolulu and Berlin—where WAITIKI 7 made its debut in '08. Not to mention, internationally praised cocktail recipes by mixologist/bandleader Randy Wong.

The album (CD or digital download) is now available at WAITIKI.com, Waitiki7.com, Amazon, iTunes, eMusic, and Napster!

 Aloha WAITIKI fans!

It's been a little while since we wrote... but lots of big news since then!

Adventures in Paradise voted Exotica Album of the Year

Thank you for voting for The WAITIKI 7 in the Hawaii Music Awards! This is W7's first win and the fourth for WAITIKI INTERNATIONAL overall since the exotica category began in 2006. We are deeply grateful for all who help make our music a success and for keeping exotica alive! Special mahalos to the two presenters for whom WAITIKI 7 made its European and American debuts: Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Kansas Public Radio (respectively). Thanks for believing in us and allowing us to share our music with the world!

Not to mention our favorite Martin Denny arrangements, like "Black Orchid," and "Quiet Village," which are just too good to pass up! Many thanks to Robert Shinoda, curator of the Gordon Biersch Jazz Wednesdays series, for hosting us.

Waitiki International's Exotica in Education Initiative

Our education initiative, Exotica in Education, launched last September with a visit by The WAITIKI 7 to the Josiah Quincy Upper School (Boston). More than just a show-and-tell about the instruments and its illustrious bird calls, Exotica in Education is as much about the opening of dialogue about the cultural, historical, and social themes surrounding exotica as it is the music's composition and performance. If you know of a school, museum, or community center that might be interested in this dynamic program, please contact randy@waitiki.com. We're bringing a taste of this program with us to Hawaii in April, with visits to select Honolulu schools. Watch waitiki.com for more news on this initiative!

Coming this summer: Flight of the Mai Tai @ Eastern Standard; Waitiki 7's second album; Luau At The Lake Festival; and more. Stay tuned!

Hailed for its "virtuosic musicianship" (Mother Jones, Sept. 2009), the album has been frequently played on NPR's Morning Edition. In addition to The Waitiki 7 (Tim Mayer, Helen Liu, Zaccai Curtis, Jim Benoit, Abe Lagrimas Jr., Lopaka Colon, and Randy Wong), Mike Dease and Greg Pare both lend their talents to the album as special guests.

Island Contemporary Album of the Year Nominee: Magic Island Sounds: the wedding album

Magic Island Sounds began as a personal side project for Randy Wong, President/Founder of WAITIKI INTERNATIONAL, and Helen Liu, violinist of The Waitiki 7. Though they originally intended to use it only as wedding favors, the album's charming collection of contemporary Hawaiian songs made it the perfect musical backdrop to complement their island wedding ceremony. Word soon spread amongst guests and friends about the magic of the music, and due to high demand, WAITIKI commercially released "Magic Island Sounds." Vocalist Charles Morgan makes his recording debut on the title track ("The Magic Islands").

Please consider also...

Abe Lagrimas Jr., drummer for The Waitiki 7, has a nomination in the Ukulele category for his uke/vibes duo album, Ukulele Vibes. And fellow exotica group Don Tiki has a nomination in Adult Contemporary for their new album, South of the Boudoir. We ask that you please show your kokua for our friends and consider casting votes for them too!
Thanks for supporting live exotica music!

WAITIKI.com • waitiki7.com

WAITIKI News: The Waitiki 7 Tour A Big Success; WFMU Re-Broadcast; Nate Chinen on Exotica; W7 Debuts @ #30 on CMJ World Top 40

Aloha WAITIKI Fans!

... and a special welcome to those of you who are new to our Newsletter!

THANKS for supporting us on the road

Our CD Release tour in support of "Adventures in Paradise" has wrapped up... it really went well. Many thanks to the hundreds of fans who came out to support us along the way. It was great to finally meet you in person. Your love for live exotica and hunger for our music is quite humbling! To those of you who weren't able to catch us this time ... have no fear, we hope to be back on the road again soon! Stay tuned to waitiki7.comfor pics, videos, and more from the tour...

WFMU Re-Broadcast at 6PM ET TODAY

Last Saturday, following a taping for Armchair Travelling's DVD of TIKI we found ourselves sitting in 5 hours of NJ traffic thanks to some bonehead construction just a half mile from WFMU. We never thought we'd make it to the station. But when we did, the time was ripe for us to play some ultra slick live exotica.

If you missed last week's broadcast of our live performance for WFMU, you can catch it again today! It airs at 6 PM. Tune into WFMU on the ray-dee-oh or online at wfmu.org. Or, if you really can't make it, check it out later: The show will be permanently archived online a few hours after it airs.

Our thanks to Gaylord Fields and Glenn Luttmann for making this show possible.

P.S.: We followed up our WFMU show with a trip to Sabor Peru in Rutherford, NJ. That place was incredible... man, the tako ceviche... you should check it out if you're ever in the area!

"If there’s room for a postmillennial exotica revival, this is the band to beat." -- Nate Chinen

Nate Chinen, the New York Times's preeminent jazz critic has posted his poignant and earnest sentiments about exotica music, referencing The Waitiki 7 as "the band to beat."

Please read it and feel free to respond to his comments with your own at: http://thegig.typepad.com/blog/2009/09/exotica-takes-a-village.html.

More Radio News...

For you radiophiles: Per the 9/22 College Music Journal charts, we debuted at #30 on the CMJ World Top 40 and were the CMJ #4 Most Added (Jazz). Also, NPR's Morning Edition has really taken a liking to us for their interlude music! Over at JazzWeek World, we peaked at #3 a few weeks ago but have been holding steady at #8. Many thanks to our radio promoter Mitchell Feldman for these excellent results.

Mahalo for your support of The Waitiki 7 and live exotica!
